Speaking from my own experiences, I dislike going to the doctor's office just as much as any other guy. I would have to be coughing up purple stuff and bed ridden for days before the thought even crossed my mind. But once I do have to go to the doctor's office, there is nothing I hate more than trying to find the actual office. Too often physicians are not listing their practices in "local" search engine, or they have moved their practice had have not updated their new address. We are in the digital age, and finding information should be easy; here are three tips to help physicians improve their web presence:

Local SEO Search Engines: This is probably the easiest, most effective way to allow your patients, or potential patients find your practice. All the big search engines, such as: Google, Bing, Yahoo, and even Facebook, all have a

"Places" section in their website. The places section allows businesses to list their information in their local area for FREE. When a person searches for "doctors" in their local area, you will always be towards the top of the search engines. When you use this method, it is important to change the information whenever need be, such as addresses, so the search engines can update themselves.

Social Media Sites: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are probably the three best social media sites for physicians. With Facebook, a physician can either make a personal page, or they can make a "Fan" page. For physicians, I recommend the Facebook "Fan" page. The "Fan" page also links to Facebook's "Places" page as mentioned above. With a "fan" page, a physician may use their name or their practice name, list all information, post updates and allow people to add them to their "Like" section on their Facebook pages. With Twitter, physicians can keep their patients up-to-date with what is going on with them, as well as follow other people / groups to keep up to date on information that is important to them. LinkedIn, like Facebook, can either be personal or you can create a "Company" page. Be sure to use the same practice name, or list your name the same way on all of these pages. If people search for your practice or name, they should rank up higher on the search engines with these social media sites. And once again, these are all free.

Physician/Practice Website: Having an internet domain with your physician name or practice name does not seem like a bad idea either, right? Anyone can buy domains from such sites as or, and it would be a good idea to buy a domain with either your name, or your practice name. Why? Well the first reason would be that, with most domain purchases, you get at least one free email account with that domain address. So for the going rate of about $8.99 for a domain, a physician or practice could have an email address of ' This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ' or ' This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. '. Also, for a little bit more money a month, a physician or practice could have a webpage developed. A lot of these website/domain hosting sites allow you to set up one free page (landing page) on your domain, or you could have someone or yourself develop a page to your liking to offer your services. When a person types in your physician name, or practice name into a search engine after purchasing a domain with the same name, chances are you will be on the top of the listings.

With these three little tips, I am hoping to see more medical physicians and practices taking advantage of these cheap, easy ways to improve their web presence. Do not let your patients get lost and find another physician again!
